When I was in uni studying fashion design back in the 80’s it was a real treat when one of our mothers sent some home cooked cakes and breads back with one of our housemates. Lemon drizzle cake from the lovely Mrs Ashe always went down a treat.
Now Mrs Ashe was very wary of all new-fangled things. I remember an incident one day as we sat around our rented flat in Limerick when she buzzed around the kitchen tiding up, cleaning it to her standard and generally being a great wholesome Irish mother. As she busied herself she wiped down the microwave that was a pretty new gadget then, (and a Godsend for us students who lived on microwaved beans and toast) where she exclaimed “my finger is gone numb, and I know what’s caused it”, she went on to tell us that she believed that the microwave rays had “nuked” her finger. Now as students all we could do was laugh and pass it off as Collette’s eccentric mother and her wild imagination. Now she actually may have had a point!
