Paula Cannon, Pen to Peg Founder talks about the importance of a mentor and how it shaped her career path

“When I was a teenager, I wanted to be a professional singer and at 17 I left home and joined a showband as lead singer. However, life on the road was not as glamorous as I thought it would be and I decided on a career change. I was lucky to find another profession that I was passionate about, fashion design.

When I graduated, I got a job working in a design studio in Dublin grading patterns by hand.  I had blisters from the large cutting shears but that didn’t stop me! I progressed to work for a factory in central Dublin, Moorlaine and was mentored by a fantastic owner, Tom Mc Donald. I worked in the sample room making first samples for designers John Rocha and Quin & Donnelly as well as making Tailored ladieswear for AWear and Dunnes Stores (large retailers in Ireland).

Tom encouraged me every step of my early career and when opportunities came for corporatewear design he allowed me to work on these as a side-line to my day job. I am forever grateful for having Tom as a mentor in the early days of my career, every young designer should have this type of encouragement.

I decided to specialise in Corporatewear and uniform design and I really loved the variety and the fact that you have to research with real people and find solutions for garment designs that can positively affect how they feel at work. I moved to the UK over 25 years ago and have been living the dream.

I consider myself very lucky to have two things that I love to do, some people search their whole life to find their calling. I continue to do what I love, sketch, research fabrics and speak with clients and their employees to design great garments. I still sing and especially love jazz and blues and I’m hoping to get back doing a bit of that in the future too!”
