Peg to Peg Founder Paula Cannon talks about her Passion for Fabrics

“My Grandfather, Michael Cannon Snr, born in 1913 – died 1988, lived in the small town of Kilcar in Co Donegal. He was a hand weaver and had two looms at the back of his house where he designed and made Donegal tweed. His customers included haute couture designer Sybil Connolly, who’s clients included Jacqueline Kennedy and Elizabeth Taylor.

When we visited his house as children, I was fascinated with the workings of the hand looms and the array of cones, colours and textures on display along the walls of this workshop. I still cannot pass a fabric without touching the surface pile and touching the fibres.

In the late 1970’s Studio Donegal was born to revive the handweaving tradition, and my grandfather, then retired, passed his weaving skills to new eager trainees.

There is no doubt that my Grandfather influenced my love of fabric. When I go to a fabric fair, I’m like a child in a sweet shop.”
